Authorizations

State authorization refers to the legal approval a university must obtain to offer educational activities to students located outside its home state. These activities include online instruction as well as on-the-ground and experiential learning experiences conducted outside of Indiana, as well as internships, clinical placements, practica, student teaching, and other field-based activities. Because authorization requirements vary by state, institutions must comply with applicable state and federal regulations to ensure programs can be offered lawfully and without interruption.

NC-SARA and SARA Participation

Each campus of Indiana University is an accredited public institution and a participant in the State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (SARA). SARA is a national initiative overseen by the National Council for State Authorization Reciprocity Agreements (NC-SARA) that helps streamline state authorization requirements for participating institutions. Through SARA participation, Indiana University may offer online and distance education programs, as well as certain out-of-state learning experiences, to students located in other SARA member states without obtaining separate authorization from each state.
